Objective of this post: The teacher/practitioner will collaborate with faculty colleagues and other members of the Physician Associate Studies leadership team to synthesise and develop the educational components of the programme, addressing all cultural, sectoral, regulatory and logistical challenges. The principal objective of the post is to enhance and participate in the development, direction, teaching, facilitation and examinations of the MSc in Physician Associate Studies' programme. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Physician Associate, with a higher degree in a relevant discipline. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Curriculum Design and Integration Collaborate with the Physician Associate Studies Programme Director and faculty to design, sequence, integrate, and oversee delivery of the pre-clinical curriculum, ensuring alignment with ARC-PA competencies, program learning outcomes, and progressive development toward clinical practice readiness. Interdepartmental Coordination and Educational Partnerships Coordinate with institutional partners and faculty across disciplines to ensure effective integration and delivery of pre-clinical modules, including clinical medicine, clinical practice, pharmacotherapeutics, professional practice, and clinical skills, in accordance with accreditation standards. Programme Planning and Scheduling Develop and manage comprehensive pre-clinical timetables that support longitudinal learning, scaffolded competency development, and appropriate student workload balance consistent with ARC-PA expectations for curriculum pacing and structure. Assessment Development and Oversight Design, implement, and evaluate valid, reliable, and fair assessment strategies aligned with stated learning outcomes and ARC-PA standards, ensuring consistency in grading, transparency in performance expectations, and appropriate documentation of student achievement. Teaching and Instructional Innovation Develop and deliver high-quality, evidence-based educational experiences using diverse instructional methodologies (including simulation, blended learning, and digital technologies), promoting clinical reasoning, patient-centered care, and professional competencies. Student Evaluation and Academic Support Monitor and evaluate student performance across the pre-clinical phase, provide timely formative and summative feedback, identify students in need of academic support, and contribute to remediation processes in accordance with program policies. Mentorship and Professional Development Serve as a clinical educator, mentor, and professional role model, fostering students' ethical practice, professionalism, interprofessional collaboration, and commitment to lifelong learning. Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Participate in systematic program evaluation, including analysis of student outcomes, assessment data, and stakeholder feedback, to inform continuous curriculum improvement and ensure ongoing compliance with ARC-PA standards. Accreditation Compliance and Documentation Support program compliance with ARC-PA accreditation requirements by maintaining accurate documentation, contributing to self-study reports, and participating in accreditation reviews and quality assurance processes. Education and Teaching The Teacher/Practitioner will contribute to the education of Physician Associate students by teaching the following core competencies that lead to qualification as a Physician Associate: Actively participate in the development and delivery of didactic and clinical skills curriculum teaching to both years of the programme. Core clinical conditions for the Physician Associate. History taking and physical examination as appropriate for the setting and complaint (e.g. ambulatory GP and specialty clinics, inpatient medical and surgical settings, ED settings). Common diagnostic testing and how to interpret results. How to make appropriate medical assessments consistent with findings. Developing and implementing treatment plans either independently or in consultation with the student's supervising consultant and/or the clinical team, and recording pertinent data in patients' medical records How to present patients' medical cases clearly and concisely. Participate in the teaching and evaluating competency in clinical procedures that have been approved by the supervising consultant, without the supervising consultant being present, except as otherwise noted. These procedures may include procedures that are usually performed under local anaesthesia. The Teacher/Practitioner will also contribute to the assessment of students including the following: Design and develop innovative learning materials and assessments based on PA programme educational criteria. Setting, marking and moderating student work, in accordance with RCSI quality assurance procedures. Undertaking tutorial responsibilities that support students and optimise their learning and career progression. Monitoring students' progress, dealing with difficulties, and encouraging students to develop highly functional self-directed learning skills. The Teacher/Practitioner will play an integral part in the PA student experience prior to and during clinical placements in local hospitals. Research The Teacher/Practitioner will also Carry out research on an ongoing basis to fulfil senior lecturer role and to disseminate data on the PA role and profession. Actively engage in scholarship, research and professional/academic publication in ways which contribute to the RCSI's objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading edge teaching. Present research at relevant conferences. Administration and Engagement The Teacher/Practitioner will also: Participate fully in ongoing course design and development, and service led initiatives. Participate in student admissions procedure and selection. Function as an ambassador for the Physician Associate profession by actively promoting the role at all levels of the healthcare system. Continuously enhance the planning, operational and process efficiency of the pre- clinical educational aspects of the curriculum, in collaboration with all stakeholders Participate fully in the life of the wider School and RCSI, and undertake duties as planned in conjunction with the Programme Director. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well-being and that of other staff and students. Carry out duties in a manner that promotes equality of opportunity, supports diversity and inclusion, and takes into account the RCSI's commitment to environmentally sustainable ways of working. Any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post. Complete all required training and continuously enhance skills and knowledge Work flexibly across RCSI's teaching facilities Provide resources and communication with student groups via Moodle. Clinical work The Teacher/Practitioner will have the opportunity to undertake clinical activities, by agreement with the Director, to maintain their clinical experience. Licensure / Certification: PA faculty in the RCSI PA Programme must have: graduated from a master's level Physician Assistant/Associate Programme achieved registration with their respective national examinations board or equivalent currently on the Managed Voluntary Register for the Irish Society of PAs, demonstrating compliance of professional registration. Person Specification: A qualified PA with a higher degree in a relevant health-related discipline. Substantial experience in educational activities with exposure to development of the Physician Associate model. Two or more years' experience in an clinical setting (i.e. GP, hospital, etc) Excellent knowledge of the educational landscape in higher and professional education. Previous experience of teaching, assessing and managing students in a clinical academic environment. Proven communication skills, with an ability to provide appropriate feedback to students and facilitate the wider system of relationships of the programme with clinical preceptors and supervisors. Excellent IT, presentation, verbal and written communication skills. Personal drive, energy and enthusiasm to deliver and inspire the achievement of excellent results. Strong commitment to quality improvement. Require minimum direction, high personal energy, positive approach to dealing with challenges and ambiguity. Additional Requirements: Please note that successful candidates will be required to complete: Occupational Health Clearance Garda (Irish police) Vetting Police Clearance (if in residence outside of Ireland for periods of 6 months or more at any stage) Garda Vetting and Occupational Health checks will be conducted by RCSI and partners but provision of Police Clearance certification from countries outside of Ireland will be the responsibility of the successful candidate.
