Position Summary...
What you'll do...
Join Walmart’s Global Tech Data Engineering team to build and scale the data platforms powering Marketplace and connecting millions of sellers and customers. As a
Staff Data Engineer,
you’ll design and optimize real-time data pipelines, enable AI-driven applications, and drive high-impact decisions at enterprise scale. This role offers end-to-end ownership and the opportunity to shape the future of data and commerce.
About the team:
Global Marketplace is Walmart’s third‑party commerce platform, connecting sellers to millions of customers across categories while leveraging Walmart’s scale, trust, and omni‑channel reach. Marketplace platforms enable third-party sellers, and internal teams to deliver seamless digital and physical commerce experiences, supported by Walmart Global Tech’s data, platform, and AI capabilities. The Data Engineering organization within Walmart Global Tech AI and Data team builds and operates the platforms that make this possible—enabling real‑time decision‑making, personalizing seller focused applications, and the next generation of AI‑driven and agent‑enabled systems. We build with a people‑led, tech‑empowered mindset, focused on reliability, trust, and long‑term sustainability.
What you'll do:
Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to support business analytics and reporting needs.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify data requirements and translate them into efficient data models and architectures.
Extract, transform, and integrate data from internal and external sources, ensuring data quality and consistency.
Implement and optimize data storage solutions using cloud platforms and big data technologies such as Apache Spark and Kafka.
Analyze complex data flows and system integrations to propose effective solutions and improvements.
Develop, test, and deploy code to automate data processing and support data governance standards.
What you'll bring:
7–10+ years of experience in data engineering, building and operating large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant data platforms.
Deep expertise in cloud-native data ecosystems (GCP or Azure preferred), including services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, or equivalent, with experience shaping platform-level decisions.
Proven track record of designing data architectures that scale across multiple teams and use cases, including batch, streaming, and hybrid systems.
Strong understanding of agent-consumable data patterns, including semantic modeling, embeddings, knowledge graphs, and context enrichment strategies.
Expert-level skills in data modeling and system design, with the ability to reason about how schema, latency, and storage choices impact retrieval quality and AI reasoning.
Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with LLM-enabled systems, including prompt orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI).
Advanced knowledge of data governance and trust frameworks, including quality, access control, lineage, and compliance—especially for AI auditability.
Fluency in Python, Java, or Scala, with a strong engineering mindset around testability, maintainability, and performance; deep experience with Spark/PySpark.
Expert SQL skills and experience optimizing analytical workloads across massive datasets.
Strong systems thinking and technical leadership, with the ability to influence without authority and drive alignment across organizational boundaries.
Experience with real-time and analytical tooling such as Kafka, Spark Streaming, Druid, Presto, and how they fit into modern data and AI architectures.
