Description: The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. This includes executing physician orders, operating pill call, and operating sick call. The role involves assisting the physician in examinations and treatments. The Nurse performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. Responsibilities include applying appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The Nurse attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. They prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined and set up the examining room and equipment. The Nurse operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. They control medications, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment. Inventory of supplies is maintained following established procedures. Emergency procedures are performed as needed. The Nurse keeps equipment and work area clean and utilizes appropriate sanitation methods. Documentation and reporting of activities are conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures, including medical file documentation. The Nurse assists the supervisor in evaluating the provision of all medical services. Maintaining the security and confidentiality of all medical records is essential. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior is a key responsibility. The medical unit is inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Supplies and equipment are securely stored or safely disposed of as needed. The Nurse assists with preparing and maintaining various standard records, reports, and logs. Reading, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures is necessary. The Nurse may respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. They conduct research of charts and review the status of inmates/residents with serious health problems. Effective communication with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the general public is required. The Nurse evaluates and recommends physical safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment. They facilitate the accreditation of the medical program by providing approved medical services. Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports are also part of the role. The Nurse escorts or coordinates the movement of inmates/residents for medical treatment. Initiating and completing investigations and inquiries with accuracy is essential. The Nurse engages in functions in confined areas, working rotating shifts and checking security measures. Being aware of potential verbal abuse is necessary when working in a challenging environment.
