*Please note the hospital reserves the right to close the competition early should a substantial number of applications be received Position Summary: The purpose of the post of Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (CPC) will be to guide and support students and staff in assigned clinical areas to ensure that the clinical placement meets the requirements of the education programme with regard to planned experiences and outcomes.
They will also work as part of the Nurse Practice Development team developing nursing practice within the hospital, and will take responsibility as project lead on specific initiatives.
Responsibilities Principal Duties and Responsibilities: The post holder must: Support nursing students in the clinical setting Co-ordinate, guide and support the pre-registration student nurse during their clinical placement.
This involves dedicated individual support to the student, the identification of learning opportunities in the clinical area, and the imparting of the CPC's knowledge and expertise in the area.
The CPC will link with the CNM and Directorate Nurse Manager in relation to specific local issues.
Assist nursing students to adapt to the clinical environment assisting with orientation programmes.
Create a climate in which nursing students feel valued, free to express themselves and seek assistance, support and advice.
Provide guidance to students on any issues relating to students' clinical placements, which arise in the clinical areas.
Develop and support Preceptors Advise relevant staff nurses and preceptors of the learning needs of individual students and assist, where necessary, in the implementation of an action plan/supportive learning plans to facilitate student development.
Support relevant managers, staff nurses and preceptors in developing their teaching and preceptor role to ensure that the students learning outcomes and competencies are achieved.
Facilitate workshops on the competency documentation as appropriate and also be available to assist the preceptorship courses.
Learning Environment Assist in creating a clinical environment, which enhances and increases the students' clinical competence.
The CPC will give encouragement and support to assigned students during the clinical placements and enables students' to build confidence.
Ensure that each student is assigned to and assessed by a designated Registered Nurse (Preceptor).
Monitor and report to the CNM and Head of Nurse Practice Development Coordinator any practices, procedures or behaviours in the clinical areas which would create a diminished learning environment for the nursing student and might adversely affect their performance.
Assist and participate with appropriate nursing personnel in formulating and implementing corrective measures to enhance nursing practice in all clinical areas.
Assist in the development and revision of learning outcomes for the clinical placements in partnership with the CNM and nursing staff.
Act as a resource person for clinical staff.
The CPC will fulfil a role in monitoring the quality of the environment by collecting specific data and participating in audits of both practice and of the clinical learning environment.
Assist in formulating and implementing of action plans, in conjunction with the relevant nurse managers, nursing staff, Nurse Practice Development Coordinator and staff of the School of Health Sciences, DCU for improving the clinical environment Management of Clinical Placement Monitor nursing performance in the clinical setting and discuss the strengths and development needs with the student and the CNM/Registered Nurse (Preceptor) and Link Lecturers.
Advise CNM and Preceptor/Registered Nurse on the learning needs of individual students as required.
Liaise with the Allocation Liaison Officer on all issues regarding both supernumerary and Internship placement allocations of the student.
Link regionally with DCU and nationally with the CPC group Ensure that the nursing student adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct (An Bord Altranais 2000) at all times Assessment of Competence The Registered Nurse/Preceptor is the primary teacher in the clinical area.
The CPC will support this clinical teaching and be involved in the preparation of nursing students for practice placement where appropriate Verify the student's progress through assessment in a collaborative approach with the Registered Nurse (Preceptor) in accordance with agreed competence assessment procedures and requirements and standards of An Bord Altranais (2005).
Liaise with the Link Lecturer assigned to practice module and discusses individual students' performance and special learning needs and where necessary assist in the implementation of an action plan to facilitate development needs.
Provide individual clinical instruction/teaching and assistance to students if required to do so and observes students' performance in actual clinical situations Practice Development Work as a member of the Nurse Education & Practice Development Team on quality initiatives such as policy, procedure, protocols and guideline development, clinical audit and development of nursing documents.
Participate in nursing practice development initiatives including the provision of education, training and information sessions when applicable.
Represent the education and PD team on local and regional groups if requested by the Head of Centre of Nurse Education and Practice Development.
Link with staff in the clinical areas facilitating the identification of practice development opportunities and the introduction of any new practices Patient Safety and Quality Ensure that effective safety procedures are developed and managed to comply with statutory obligations, in conjunction with relevant staff e.g.
health and safety procedures, emergency procedures.
Observe, report and take appropriate action on any matter which may be detrimental to staff and/or service user care or well being / may be inhibiting the efficient provision of care.
Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g.
health and safety, infection control, storage and use of controlled drugs etc.
Ensure completion of incident / near miss forms / clinical risk reporting Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc.
Professional Development Maintain and develop competence in professional nursing matters and relevant specialist knowledge including reflective practice, research and leadership skills, assessment and supervision of students.
Keep up to date with the Requirement & Standards for Nurse Registration Education Programmes of Nursing & Midwifery Board Ireland and all other relevant publications that impact on the Nurse Undergraduate Programme.
Keep up to date with curriculum developments and undertaking clinical learning environment audits.
Participate in activities that enhance their own professional development Refer to the Scope of Practice Framework (An Bord Altranais, 2015/ Nursing & Midwifery Board Ireland) in their professional practice.

Qualifications Selection Criteria: Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory: Candidates must have at the latest date of application:
- Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by An Bord Altranais agus Cnimhseachais na hireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland) or be entitled to be so registered And Possess a 3rd Level Qualification at Level 8 (Honours degree) or higher And Have at least 5 years post registration experience of acute general nursing which 2 must be in a student learning environment And Have completed a Teaching and Assessing course/ module or equivalent.
And Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role And Full drivers licence Please note that appointment to and continuation in posts that require statutory registration is dependent upon the post holder maintaining annual registration in the relevant division of the register maintained by an Bord Altranais agus Cnimhseachais na hireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) Desirable: Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in a student learning environment as relevant to the role Demonstrate theoretical and clinical knowledge appropriate to the complexities of the post Demonstrate effective communication skills including the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner; ability to facilitate and manage groups through the learning process; the ability to give constructive feedback to support learning.
