In this key technical leadership role, you'll own the design, development, and delivery of scalable, high-quality mobile systems and features, ensuring they integrate seamlessly with our backend services and bring Headspace's mission to life. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll shape how millions of members access mental health care through fast, reliable, and deeply personalized mobile experiences. You'll operate at the frontier of modern mobile development, leveraging AI-assisted tooling and workflows such as Cursor, Claude etc. to prototype faster, iterate more effectively, and unlock new ways of building. You'll guide major projects, drive our technical roadmap through RFCs, and mentor other engineers to elevate our standards for engineering excellence, supporting continued growth and innovation across our architecture. What you will bring: Required Skills: BA/BS degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent experience. 7+ years of experience building and delivering production mobile applications, with a track of successfully leading delivery of complex, cross-functional projects from design through release. 4+ years of experience with native Android and/or iOS development, plus 2+ years of hands-on experience developing with Flutter, including deep familiarity with its frameworks, third-party libraries, and APIs. Expertise in mobile architecture and design patterns (e.g., MVC, MVVM) and experience designing reliable, scalable mobile systems. Experience implementing comprehensive testing strategies (unit, integration, and end-to-end) to ensure reliability, performance, and maintainability. Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and workflows to increase efficiency and quality in building and supporting mobile features. Demonstrated ability to make pragmatic technical decisions, balancing product requirements with long-term strategy and trade-offs. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences. Proven ability to mentor and coach engineers, fostering technical growth and elevating team capabilities. Creating clarity and empathy, fostering a culture of courageous feedback and continuous improvement. Preferred Skills: Experience building software in health tech or a similarly regulated industry. Familiarity with specific Flutter state management solutions (e.g., flutter_bloc) and a strong background in mobile testing, monitoring, and alerting principles. Location: This role is open to candidates across the US, with preferred locations in San Francisco, CA (hybrid), New York City, NY (remote), and Seattle, WA (remote). Candidates must permanently reside in the US full-time. If your primary residence is in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, this role follows our hybrid model, with 3 days per week in office to support in-person collaboration. Your recruiter will share more details. Pay & Benefits: The anticipated new hire base salary range for this full-time position is $140,400-$195,000 + equity + benefits. For candidates based in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle, a separate salary range of $179,400-$224,250 applies, consistent with our location-based compensation philosophy.
