Research Scientist Position at Kleinstiver Laboratory The Kleinstiver Laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic candidate to join our research group. Our research group engineers and optimizes genome editing technologies to apply them for biomedical research and to treat human diseases. We pursue protein and nucleic acid engineering methods to impart desirable properties into CRISPR-Cas enzymes to develop technologies capable of installing single letter DNA edits (e.g. base editors), for DNA writing approaches (e.g. prime editors, click editors, etc.) that can install a variety of short DNA edits, for various editors capable of larger sequence edits (e.g. CRISPR-associated transposases (CASTs), transposons, recombinases, etc.), and other non-CRISPR editing platforms. Optimized proteins are developed via rational design, directed evolution, structure-guided engineering, machine learning, and additional approaches. We then deploy these optimized tools in pre-clinical studies using animal models and primary human cells, assessing their potential to correct pathogenic mutations for a diverse set of diseases including liver-based disorders, inborn errors of immunity, neurological and neuromuscular, deafness, and others. The candidate will play an integral role in managing the laboratory and projects related to genome editing technology development, protein engineering method development, and expediting the clinical application of these tools. Candidates will ideally have interests in genome engineering, technology development, the creation of genetic medicines, and other related fields. Essential Functions:
Responsible for oversight of all lab supply and equipment, purchasing and maintenance. Coordinates all regulatory and compliance activities. Trains staff in specialized lab techniques. Assists with subject scheduling. Provides input on strategy, based on knowledge of industry and trends. Applies project management techniques to ensure development initiatives stay on track. Contributes to scientific literature and may present the data at meetings. Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques.
Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required or Master's Degree Related Field of Study preferred. Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? Yes. Experience: Research experience (in a lab setting) 3-5 years required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations. Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects. Must have an aptitude for technical problem solving. Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab. Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research. Must possess an aptitude for budget management.
