About

Job Description The Role We think wireless communication can be perfectly reliable – no matter where our cars go. We’re looking for system software experts who agree.
Our Vehicle Communication team is hiring a software engineering manager to lead the development of system software in our Linux‑based networking system. You’ll guide a team working to ship the world’s most reliable connectivity.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership role. We hire managers that software engineers are excited to work for: those who are excited about the work, know how and when to help, when to mentor, and share a deep commitment to shipping great software.
What You’ll Do GM is developing a breakthrough new system for vehicle software and communications, and your team will be at the heart of it. Because we design our own hardware, you’ll collaborate closely with hardware engineering to meet strict power, performance, and reliability targets. You’ll also partner with application and cloud teams to ensure seamless end‑to‑end behavior across the full ecosystem.
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, sockets, drivers, user‑space networking).
Deep understanding of system software fundamentals: OS internals, kernel or driver development, system daemons, IPC, and resource management.
Experience with application‑level protocols like HTTP and how developers use them.
Demonstrated ability to triage, debug, and lead teams through complicated system‑wide issues.
Experience with networking on Linux, Android, or QNX (expertise in one, familiarity with others is ideal).
Proficiency in at least one of C, C++, or Java.
Proven experience leading or mentoring engineers, setting technical direction, or driving cross‑team initiatives.
Excellent culture‑building skills: we earnestly love our cars and our customers. The best way for us to show that is to ship amazing things, in an amazing environment where curiosity and execution live side‑by‑side.
BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
7+ years software development experience, with 3–5 years in leadership, team lead, or managerial capacity.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Working knowledge of WiFi, LTE, 5G, Bluetooth, and/or UWB.
Experience with system‑level capabilities such as secure boot, OTA pipelines, platform security, diagnostics, or telemetry.
Experience with physical connectivity systems or embedded networking (“vehicles are data centers on wheels”).
Familiarity with packet sniffers, protocol analyzers, or network debugging tools.
Experience shipping highly reliable software using telemetry, observability, or distributed diagnostics.
Strong writing, documentation, and collaboration skills — they’re essential to good system design and effective leadership.
Experience building teams, hiring talent, and developing engineers professionally.
Compensation The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.
The salary range for this role is $217,500 to $333,400. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
Benefits From day one, we’re looking out for your well‑being–at work and at home–so you can focus on realizing your ambitions.
