Job Description Job Summary The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR), an organization within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is responsible for the design, monitoring and statistical analysis of clinical trials and observational studies for several major national and international NIH‑funded clinical research networks. CBAR employs over 100 statisticians, programmers, research scientists, faculty, and staff and provides statistical analysis for the world's largest network of AIDS clinical researchers.
Job‑Specific Responsibilities The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) is actively recruiting a System Administrator as part of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Infrastructure Team within the Department of Information Technology, providing state‑of‑the‑art computational expertise to the CBAR.
Collaborate with IT Infrastructure Team members to maintain and administer Linux, Windows, and VMware computer environments, including hardware, system software, applications software, networking, and all configurations.
Plan and conduct comprehensive infrastructure engineering duties, implementing IT solutions to complex business problems.
Provide expert level technical and project leadership, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Proactively plan, coordinate, and implement system security measures to protect data, software, and hardware.
Plan and orchestrate disaster recovery, compliance, business continuity, and security solutions for the CBAR computing environment.
Monitor system performance, create user accounts, manage access, and perform routine system startup and shutdown procedures.
Apply patches, manage and install packages, and conduct updates and upgrades to maintain a stable environment, including data backups and disaster recovery operations.
Troubleshoot and resolve user/server issues promptly with proper documentation.
Support flexible scheduling, including longer hours during implementation and evaluation of technology, and one Saturday of maintenance per month.
This position requires schedule flexibility to work longer hours when implementing and evaluating technology and, as necessary, to troubleshoot and resolve problems. Commitment to customer service, experience in a fast‑paced environment, and teamwork are essential.
Preferred certifications: RedHat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA). Within one year of hire, the finalist must obtain RHCSA and CompTIA Server+ certification if not already certified. Costs will be paid by the hiring department.
Term appointment: November30,2027.
Physical Requirements
Occasional lifting of up to approximately 50 pounds.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
Minimum of two years of post‑secondary education or relevant work experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
5+ years of relevant IT experience, including 3+ years in systems administration.
Experience maintaining and troubleshooting virtual server environments and implementing security measures to protect data, software, and hardware.
Familiarity with data security compliance standards such as NIST800-53 and 21CFRPart11.
Proficiency with the following technologies:
Red Hat Linux
Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory
Virtualization (e.g., VMware)
Linux shell scripting
Statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, Python) on a research computing cluster is a plus
Ansible and Jira are a plus
Excellent interpersonal skills with empathy toward coworkers and customers.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience working independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Organized, detail‑oriented, self‑starter, able to communicate complex IT and security concepts effectively to non‑technical people.
Certificates and Licenses
RedHat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and CompTIA Server+ certifications required within one year of hire if not already certified. Costs will be paid by the hiring department.
Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses or an external equivalent is preferred.

Appointment end date: November 30, 2027.
Standard hours/schedule: 35 hours per week.
