Purpose:
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Respiratory Unit conducts year-round statewide surveillance of respiratory illness due to influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). MDHHS participates in the national RESP-NET program, which coordinates the collection of data from hospitalized influenza, COVID-19, and RSV patients in a specified catchment area. The successful candidate will work with the RESP-NET team and Respiratory Unit in the MDHHS Vaccine Preventable Disease Epidemiology Section, within the Division of Immunizations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform data entry, data management, data analysis, and case follow-up for influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and other respiratory viral illnesses.
Conduct medical chart reviews, data extraction, and update case reports in a REDCap database.
Assist with expansion efforts of the RESP-NET program.
Liaise with hospitals participating in RESP-NET to carry out the grant deliverables.
Participate in quality assurance efforts.
Assist with disease outbreak investigations as needed.
Assist with grant-related projects.
Participate in state-level preparedness activities to respond to any public health emergency as needed.
Provide assistance and support as needed for activities and projects within the Division of Immunizations.
Report/update on a regular basis to Supervisor.
Maintain a positive, credible, professional relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI and MDHHS projects and represent the best interest of MPHI and MDHHS at all times.
All other duties as assigned.
Education: Education:
A bachelor’s degree in Science, Public Health and/or Statistics required. Preferred candidate will possess a master’s degree with a major in epidemiology or in public health with a minimum of 12 combined graduate level term hours or 8 semester hours in epidemiology and biostatistics.
Experience: Experience:
Minimum of one year working in public health or infectious disease.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
Knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology.
Works well in team situations, is self‑motivated, meets deadlines, and handles multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to present scientific and technical information to audiences.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Successful candidate is expected to observe the MDHHS dress code and workplace policies. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required to perform duties of the position. Occasional site visits and other travel may be required. Work location is hybrid or remote (office/remote) and subject to change based on Department policies.
This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.
