Duties for This Position Medication Preparation and Distribution
Prepare, package, label, and distribute medications under pharmacist supervision. Assist with medication dispensing for inpatient, emergency department, outpatient, and clinic patients. Prepare unit-dose medications according to departmental policies and regulatory standards. Compound sterile and non-sterile preparations, including IV medications, syringes, nutrition products, and other compounded therapies including chemotherapies in accordance with USP
and USP
requirements. Deliver medications, including urgent and STAT orders, to patient care areas. Support restocking of crash carts, anesthesia trays, and emergency medication supplies. Inventory Management
Order medications and supplies through approved vendors. Receive, stock, rotate, and organize inventory while processing returns and credits. Maintain appropriate medication and supply levels throughout patient care departments and clinics. Monitor inventory for shortages, backorders, recalls, and expiration dates. Remove outdated or discontinued medications according to established procedures. Documentation and Medication Records
Maintain accurate records related to medication distribution, inventory, and controlled substances. Submit required controlled substance data to state and federal monitoring systems. Assist with audits, billing reconciliation, charge capture, reporting, and quality assurance activities. Compliance and Quality Assurance
Adhere to applicable regulations, accreditation standards, hospital policies, and pharmacy procedures. Participate in inspections, storage audits, and regulatory preparedness activities. Ensure secure handling, storage, and documentation of medications, including controlled and hazardous drugs. Support medication safety, infection prevention, and quality improvement initiatives. Complete all required training, certifications, competencies, and annual education requirements. Communication and Customer Service
Collaborate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, providers, patients, and other healthcare staff. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and excellent customer service. Department Support
Contribute to workflow improvement projects and operational initiatives. Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment. Perform additional duties as assigned by pharmacy leadership. Qualifications for This Position Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician training program required. Licensure and Certification
Current Utah Pharmacy Technician license in good standing required. National certification through PTCB or ExCPT required. Experience
Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred. Sterile compounding experience preferred. Experience with electronic medical records preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication distribution systems, compounding techniques, and medication safety practices. Familiarity with pharmaceutical calculations, medical terminology, and hospital pharmacy workflows. Understanding of USP
and USP
standards preferred. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities. Effective communication and customer service skills. Ability to work independently within the pharmacy technician scope of practice under pharmacist supervision. Proficiency with pharmacy software and electronic health records.
