Job Description:
The Pathfinders Program is an earn-and-learn workforce development program at Intermountain Health designed to help individuals—especially those with little or no healthcare experience—enter the field and build long-term careers.
Within the Sterile Processing Tech (SPT) track, participants are hired into a hospital-based role where they are trained to clean, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments that are critical to patient safety. The program includes a mix of hands-on training in the sterile processing department and structured learning, with dedicated coaching and support throughout the process.
Essential Functions
Operates and monitors sterilization
equipment.
Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for
decontamination.
Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power
equipment.
Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
Responds to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal
regulations.
Provides on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the
department.
Promotes mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, and abides by service behavior
standards.
May be required to work overtime based on business
need;
May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business
need and m ay be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled
shift.

Must be enrolled in the Pathfinders program
Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team.
Ability to work
days,
nights and / or
weekends.
Physical Requirements
Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
