About

Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Advanced Research & Knowledge Management (ARKM) division supports the ASC's mandate by leading a data analytics program that supports data-driven, evidence-based, policy, operational, and business decisions. ARKM also leads the development and deployment of an education and training program that is unique to the ASC, focused on the skills and knowledge needed in a securities regulatory environment. It also serves as an expert internal resource for updates, research, and analysis on existing, increasing and emerging risks that require regulatory responses, and considers the impact of innovation in capital markets through technology testing.

The opportunity

The Summer Student will work with other members of the Data & Analytics team to provide analyses to the ASC divisions. You will have the opportunity to work with unique regulatory datasets and develop analyses to help the ASC better understand our capital markets, support proactive compliance and inform policy development. Analyses may require manipulating large or complex datasets and may require developing or enhancing existing databases. Specific work will depend on skills, experience and interest of the selected candidate.

Key responsibilities include
  • Working with other team members to define the problem or question being answered, identify the data to be used, and follow an appropriate methodology.
  • Gathering regulatory data filed with the ASC and from other sources for research and analysis.
  • Developing descriptive statistics and analytical models.
  • Other related duties, as required.
The ideal candidate will possess
  • Be enrolled in the third or fourth year of a degree program, or a post-graduate program, at a recognized post-secondary institution, in a quantitative program, with an interest in economics, finance, or markets
  • Have experience working in an environment where professionalism, confidentiality, problem- solving, critical thinking skills and flexibility are required.
  • Be detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Have strong research and analytical skills.
  • Have experience with Python.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office, in particular, Excel.
  • Experience cleaning, transforming and visualizing large data sets is preferred.
