Job Description
Summary/Objective The Student Reengagement Coordinator is the heart of our school’s commitment to student presence, persistence, and success. This role exists because we believe every student deserves a champion—someone who notices when they’re struggling, reaches out with care and consistency, and works alongside families to remove the barriers that keep them from showing up. This is not a punitive role. It is a relationship-first position rooted in empathy, trust, and a deep commitment to student success.
The ideal candidate understands that chronic absenteeism is often a symptom of a broader challenge—whether logistical, emotional, or situational—and approaches every family conversation with curiosity rather than judgment. At the same time, this person must be organized, data-savvy, persistent, and comfortable holding families accountable for agreed-upon expectations in a firm yet compassionate way.
Essential Functions
Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly attendance for all enrolled students
Identify patterns of chronic absenteeism and truancy at early stages, prior to escalation
Maintain accurate, up-to-date attendance records and documentation in compliance with state and school policies
Generate and analyze attendance reports to present trends, concerns, and progress to school leadership
Coordinate with teachers to receive timely absence notifications and participation flags
Monitor and notify new enrollments that are at high risk of truancy and low academic success. This early warning system needs to identify: Prior school history - does the student have a history of changing schools frequently? Need MSDS access;
Current attendance - need attendance report from prior school. If the student has missed more than 10% of the school days, they are at high risk for truancy. If they have missed 5-10%, they are at moderate risk. 0-5% is low risk.
Historical Behavior report - if the student has been suspended 2 or more times, they are at high-risk of truancy, failure, and drop-out
Serve as the first point of contact for families regarding attendance concerns—reaching out with warmth, consistency, and urgency
Make phone calls, send emails, and utilize other communication platforms to connect with families at the earliest signs of disengagement
Facilitate attendance conferences with families to collaboratively identify barriers and develop realistic attendance improvement plans
Maintain detailed logs of all outreach attempts and family communications, using our Pulse system
Translate attendance data into accessible, non-intimidating language for families during conferences and written communications
Conduct empathetic, structured conversations with families to uncover root causes of absences (technology, scheduling, health, motivation, life circumstances, etc.). Including home visits, when necessary.
Connect students and families with relevant Family and Community Liaison support
Develop and implement individualized reengagement plans in partnership with students, families, and school staff
Follow up consistently on attendance improvement plans and adjust strategies based on progress
Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administration to create a coordinated support team around chronically absent students
Maintain and continuously improve intervention tiers
Ensure attendance practices align with Michigan compulsory education laws and school policy
Prepare required attendance documentation for truancy referrals when family intervention has not produced improvement, while ensuring families understand each step of the process
Coordinate with local authorities or court systems as needed, always prioritizing family dignity and student well-being
Track all school-issued technology assigned to withdrawn students
Proactively communicate with families of withdrawn students regarding the return of school devices
Coordinate device pickup, drop-off, or shipping logistics in collaboration with the technology and operations team
Maintain accurate records of device status, condition, and return timelines
Escalate unresolved technology recovery cases to administration as appropriate
Maintain exceptional organization and meticulous attention to detail
Provide data analysis of attendance reports and relevant tracking information
Other duties as assigned
