Overview and Purpose of the Role

At Schroeder Ambulatory Centre we deliver compassionate, high-quality surgical care with a focus on patient safety and recovery. Our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) supports patients immediately following surgery as they emerge from anesthesia and prepare for discharge. You'll be part of a dedicated clinical team committed to excellence in perioperative care.

The  Personal Support Worker (PSW) in the PACU supports Registered Nurses and other clinical staff by providing essential patient care and unit support activities. You'll help ensure a safe, clean, and well-organized PACU environment and assist patients with basic needs (including transfers) during the postoperative recovery period.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in delivering basic patient care activities as directed by nursing staff, including positioning, safe transfers, mobilization, and comfort measures.
  • Support patients with hygiene needs and elimination assistance while maintaining privacy and dignity.
  • Help with equipment setup and supply management in the PACU; restock supplies and maintain a clean, safe unit environment.
  • Assist with patient transport and safe movement between PACU and other areas of the facility.
  • Observe and report relevant patient information and changes in condition to the Registered Nurse promptly.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Adhere to infection control standards, safety policies, and PACU procedures.
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.

Education, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Health Care Aide Certificate or equivalent recognized training
  • Current BLS certification
  • Previous clinical or healthcare experience, preferably in surgery, acute care, or recovery settings.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Ability to safely perform patient transfers and physical tasks
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Demonstrated good organizational and problem solving skills in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills with an ability to work well with a variety of staff, patients and visitors.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to perform effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments, balancing multiple competing priorities.
  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
  • Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
