The CEI Technician (Statewide) is a remote position that monitors asphalt, concrete, and earthwork for North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) construction projects, ensuring work meets client and contractor specifications.
Summary The CEI Technician is responsible for daily monitoring of asphalt paving, concrete, and earthwork to ensure compliance with project specifications. Duties also include engineering inspection activities such as construction observation, field sampling of asphalt, and recording daily notes for the engineering staff.
Responsibilities
Ensure all materials, procedures, and safety rules comply with the latest NCDOT standards.
Sample and test construction materials to meet the quality requirements of project specifications.
Conduct material sampling of concrete, asphalt, and aggregates.
Maintain daily construction inspection notes for CEI document management.
Interact and communicate effectively with colleagues and client representatives.
Attend meetings and interact with clients and third‑party personnel.
Use diplomacy in difficult and stressful situations.
Education and Experience Requirements
HS diploma or equivalent required; technical college coursework in engineering preferred.
2 or more years of highway construction or asphalt roadway experience preferred.
Experience in DOT QC/inspection work required; current certifications required.
Certified Erosion Control Inspector in North Carolina preferred.
Strong written and communication skills required.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn new technology.
Above‑average math and problem‑solving skills required.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
Current driver’s license with a safe driving record required.
Legal authorization to work in the United States required.
Physical Demands This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds, sometimes frequently. The employee must be able to travel to and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise, high dust, extreme temperature, and uneven terrain. The employee must also visually examine construction materials and finished structures in various weather and field conditions, including heights and traffic hazards.
Expected Hours of Work This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week). Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with an unpaid lunch hour. Overtime is generally not anticipated; occasional projects may require additional hours, compensated in accordance with company policy. Flexible schedules may be available with prior approval.
